Lawn Mowing and Lawn Health

  • Mow at the correct height for grass type – in Minnesota we have cool season grass varieties which thrive at a cut height at 3 inches or above. It helps shade out weeds and keeps soil temperatures cooler.
  •   Alternate Mowing directions or patters when possible even slight variations reduce compaction, and turf wear.
  •   Adjust cutting height, based upon the amount of growth, and weather conditions, slightly taller grass will hold more moisture and nutrients during hotter summer months.
  •    Mulch clippings back into the lawn, unless there is an excessive amount. The clippings improve soil quality while minimizing run off.
  •  Maintain grass height in to the fall, taller grass left over winter increases possible pest activity, and contributes to spring issues such as winter mold.
  • Sharp blades provide a clean cut, dull blades leave jagged edges and turf is more susceptible to diseases.
