- Mow at the correct height for grass type – in Minnesota we have cool season grass varieties which thrive at a cut height at 3 inches or above. It helps shade out weeds and keeps soil temperatures cool.
- Alternate Mowing directions or patters when possible even slight variations reduce compaction, and turf wear.
- Adjust cutting height, based upon the amount of growth, and weather conditions, slightly taller grass will hold more moisture and nutrients during hotter summer months.
- Mulch clippings back into the lawn, unless there is an excessive amount. The clippings improve soil quality while minimizing run off.
- Maintain grass height in to the fall, taller grass left over winter increases possible pest activity, and contributes to spring issues such as winter mold.
- Sharp blades provide a clean cut, dull blades leave jagged edges and turf is more susceptible to diseases.
